Cognitive Neuroscience, a relatively new field of research aims to answer this question. Weight control is biological, but how does the psychological mind work with the biological brain and body? Many contributions related to methods and biological results are not underlined in this review, although for a social cognitive neuroscience practitioner would be relevant topics. So even though there is a biological substrate, we need our cognitive controls--the “minded brain”--more than ever if we want to control the burgeoning development of worldwide obesity. I have no wish to attack the authors of the piece. Vanderbilt's approach is to invest in people, in cutting-edge facilities and technologies, and in a collegial atmosphere that encourages collaboration across far-flung disciplines, from biology, pharmacology and engineering, to psychology, psychiatry and neurosurgery. This field, called cognitive neuroscience, serves as a critical bridge between psychology and neuroscience, and has relevance for a wide range of brain and learning disorders. Yesterday, I read a paper that, to my mind, embodies what's wrong with cognitive neuroscience: Changes in the Amygdala Produced by Viewing Strabismic Eyes. Neuroscientist Antonio Damasio has written of our “minded brain. Although the book is not about neuroscience methods, most of them are well represented (Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging, Event-related brain potential methods, etc.) and the beginner receives a general overview of them that will be main conclusions (social and biological) for the JASSS reader. Evolved for weight control have been hijacked and overwhelmed by our current obesogenic environment. What are the biological foundations of the mind? Cognitive neuroscience is the study of human cognition, or thought, as it relates to neuroscience, or the biological functions of the brain and nervous system.
